The title says it all, really. I recently experience one of the most terrible things ever to happen to a bookworm in my opinion ever. So there I was, browsing Goodreads and other blogs for yet another book to read (very carefully ignoring the twenty ones sitting on my TBR pile). After an adventure through the inter webs, I finally found a book that caught my attention. Being a rather impulsive person, I bought it and began reading it on my nook immediately.
But I was so confused.
As I began reading, I found myself completely lost as to what was happening, which characters were who, and why, for the love of books everywhere, why the author would just throw her readers into this new world with absolutely no previous explanation or build up. Still, I figured maybe the author was just trying to like, shock-immerse the reader so we would accumulate quickly to the story and characters. Well...
I
WAS
SO
WRONG
Turns out, technology hates me (should have figured that out when I previously dealt with all the formatting issues on here a few months ago). My lovely nook app, rather than opening up in the beginning of the book, opened it up to chapter 24.
CHAPTER. TWENTY-FOUR.
Now, obviously this wasn't caused by human error. Oh no, there's no possible way that when I was opening the book, I accidentally slid the little positioning bar all the way there. And there was no way that I didn't read the chapter title to see that I was starting in the middle of the book rather than the beginning...
Still, it was quite a traumatic experience for me. I read an entire chapter right in the middle of the book. I felt as though I had spoiled the whole thing for myself. So, sadly, I've decided to put it down for a while, at least until my recall goes a little fuzzy with what I read in that chapter. Which is so disappointing because I was really looking forward to reading that book. Le sigh.
So tell me my beautiful wonderlings, what would you have done if this terrible situation happened to you? How would you have reacted? I basically gasped in horror and spent the rest of the day in mourning. Leave a comment below and let me know!

How funny! I mean sad ... definitely sad. But a little bit funny too. :-) I've never had this happen to me, but I HAVE had a book open up after the prologue on my Kindle - luckily I noticed it right away because the prologue was important!!

Lol, I definitely find it pretty hilarious that this happened! It was the first time anything like that had happened to me which is why I probably didn't bother paying attention to the chapter numbers. Glad you caught that right away! It's always frustrating accidentally missing a part of the book!
Deletehahahaha i have to laugh at this, but it wasn't the books fault right?
ReplyDeleteLooking back I laughed at it, too! And you're right, I definitely won't be taking it out on my rating of the book once I do get around to opening it again :)
DeleteOMG. That would definitely be a traumatic experience for me. I probably would've done the same thing you did: put it down and just mourn a little. I would just go read something else until you kind of forget about what you read. Then just go back to the beginning of this book and act like nothing happened :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, that's exactly my plan! I've already started and finished a different book so I figure one more and then maybe I'll be ready to jump back into this one! :)
DeleteWhoa, this happens?! WHAT. Why the heck would a nook book do this?! The horrors.

SERIOUSLY! I nearly died of a heart attack when I realized. I'm definitely going to be much more careful when opening books on my nook from now on :D
DeleteHow terrible! This is why I love psychical books so much, there's no chance of this happening ever! Although once I bought a book that was missing a few chapters in the middle. I spotted it right away and got sent a new copy after complaining, but still! Having to stop, waiting weeks for a new copy to arrive? Not fun and it pretty much ruined the book :(
ReplyDeletePhysical books simply cannot be beat. They are just too perfect and they never betray us in this way...except with missing chapters. That would be so frustrating! I can't imagine having to wait mid book in order to get a fixed copy! So sad that ruined the book :(
DeleteOh no you started in the middle of the book. That sucks!
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty terrible but I will survive! And hopefully still be just as excited about this book the next time I try to pick it up as I was then!
