J.A. George Guest Post!

Hey guys!  Today I have the pleasure of inviting debut author, J.A. George, here to Wonderland's Reader!  Her book, Gifted, is the first installment of a new series called The Hayven Series.  J.A. George was kind enough to come here today and give a bit of an explanation about Gifted and the thought process that went behind it coming about!

So, without further ado, here's J.A.!

Hello!

Seeing as GIFTED is my first published novel, you’ve probably never heard of me, so I suppose this is the perfect opportunity to introduce myself. My name is J.A. George and I’m the author of GIFTED − The Hayven Series. If I were to summarise my novel in a nutshell, it would go along the lines of something like this:

There is no chosen one in this story.

She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and happened to make a decision that altered her future forever. It happens to all of us every day.

Avery Gray is a size twelve university student with a penchant for dry humour, and she’s as normal as they come. One rainy afternoon, Avery had to make a choice: go through the alleyway or around it. Two possible options. One would have had her future continue on as planned, the other would ensure that her future never remained the same again. She unknowingly went with the latter.

Change can be good. It can bring new opportunities, new friends and a life you never thought possible. Change can be bad. It can bring you people determined to burn your city to the ground.

It all depends on the decisions you make.

Yup – that’s an acceptable nutshell.

As you probably guessed from the blurb, GIFTED fits into a few different genres, but I would narrow them down to contemporary young adult fantasy, but a few traces of romance, comedy, adventure and mystery can be found floating around inside.

As you could probably tell from that tid-bit, Avery, or as she’s commonly known, Ava, is my main character, and possibly my favourite (it changes every day). She’s pretty awesome if I do say so myself. This published version of GIFTED is my second edition and in my first edition Avery was completely different. In the past, I’ve had problems with writing for other people. All authors want their books to sell and in order to do that, you have to write a book readers will want to buy. The annoying thing is, authors don’t know exactly what readers want. We may know a few things, but not all. In my first edition of GIFTED, I tried to write a novel that would make everyone happy, until I realised that that was impossible. So after two years, I randomly made the decision to write for myself. I am in serious danger of going off on a tangent, but I’ll be putting up a post on my blog all about writing for myself. Long story short, Ava was a bit boring, in my opinion, because I was trying to follow trends I’d seen before, trying to fit her into too many different boxes. Now, I just love her. She makes me laugh − a lot. I hope she’ll make you laugh too.

The one question I get asked the most about my book is where I got the idea from. I have no idea where I got the idea from. I promise you, I don’t! Yet, it would be nothing short of a lie to tell you it simply fell into my head one day, but it often does feel like that’s exactly what happened. I really just wanted to write a book I wanted to read and certain elements sort of fell into place. Which now that I come to think of it, is probably why GIFTED fits into a few different categories.

When it comes to settings in GIFTED, I have two. I knew from the get-go that I wanted one of them to be based in the UK, but instead of using a town that already exists, I made one up – Huxton. Why make up a town when you have so many options at your disposal, I hear you ask. Well, it was so much more fun to make up my own world because really, anything goes; no-one can tell you the place you’ve made up isn’t exact or accurate because well, you’ve made it up, so of course it isn’t! Same goes for my fantasy setting – Hayven, a city in a country separated from the rest of the world where only gifters (ordinary people with extra-ordinary gifts) can go.

Going onto the concept of being gifted, well, that stemmed from me. No, unfortunately, I am not supernaturally gifted (yet – I’m waiting on it), but I am obsessed with people who are different. Now, when I say ‘different’, I don’t mean the gifts my characters have, such as, pre-cognition, shape-shifting, weather control, and earth manipulation, I just mean…different. The characters in GIFTED have supernatural gifts, but without the gifts, they are still different, they’re an eclectic bunch. I like the idea of ordinary people being extra-ordinary in some way or another, whether it’s to do with their artistic capabilities, the way their brain works, or their imagination – the reason why Roald Dahl remains my favourite author to this day. Because of this, I made a city full of normal people with gifts and personalities that are anything but normal, anything but ordinary and boring.

In case you were wondering, none of the characters in my book are based on people I know, rather influenced, as in, I’ve mixed different bits of people and made them into one person. Or I make them into people I’d love to meet one day. Are any of the characters based on me? I suppose they are. Something that’s extremely important to me is realism. I know GIFTED is fantasy, but I want readers to read about these characters and imagine seeing these people walking down their streets on a regular Wednesday. That’s why one of my settings is a contemporary setting – realism.

The title GIFTED just seemed the most appropriate as I wanted to summarise the entire book in one word and I think it does that really well, and I will also follow that trend with the three books that form the rest of the series. GIFTED is a title that graces the cover of other books out there, but I didn’t want to change the title because nothing suits it as much. So I added a subtitle and called my series, The Hayven Series.

My book cover is an interesting topic (well, to me anyway) because when I found a cover designer I liked the only thing I knew was that I didn’t want an actual person on the cover but rather an important image, and I finally decided on Mysteria Park.

The scene and significance surrounding Mysteria Park is why I felt it was best to have it featured on the front cover. However, I soon opted for a re-design as I wanted something a lot more plain and simple.

I’ve said a lot already in this guest post, but over on my blog, I have an entire post about my book cover process if you’d like to check it out!

Anywho, I think it’s time to bring this guest post to an end (*whispers* otherwise I might not get invited back!).

Thank you, Ashtyn, for allowing me to post on your blog. It’s been fun!

My Review:  *Warning: Contains mild spoilers* I had high hopes for this one.  I'd heard nothing but good things about it before buying it so I was excited to start and looking forward to a sweet, romantic read.  Unfortunately, April Showers fell flat.  I had a hard time finishing it because of how cheesy it was.  I feel as though the author took every single cliche from every New Adult book out there and rolled it into one, even if it didn't work.  I was drowning in cliches while reading.

I really didn't like the characters in this book.  April was childish and annoying, constantly contradicting herself.  She and Isaac definitely had insta love, something that did not at all work for this book.  As the reader, I knew nothing about him.  And April didn't either but he suddenly was her whole world.  He was sweet from what we did find out and funny but nothing that would make me fall in love with him after having one conversation.  And then when, of course, their "relationship" fell apart, April finds herself with Lukas, a boy that is just as quickly smitten with her as Isaac was.  I actually liked him more than Isaac because we learned more about him and saw him more.  I was frustrated at the end when, inevitably, Lukas did something terrible to show her that she was right for Isaac all along.  What he apparently did was unbelievable and felt forced, like the author grabbed some random thing out of thin air and forced it in to fix the situation.  I just couldn't back Isaac and April's relationship at all.

The plot was okay.  Had it been backed up with better characters and less cliches, it would have been quite enjoyable!  It had the potential to be a wonderful book and I only wish I had been able to like the characters more than I did.

About the Author
Nearly every writer struggles to put together information about themselves, perhaps because we’re so used to detailing the lives and ways of others. Review: Hopeless

Title:  Hopeless
Series:  Hopeless #1
Author:  Colleen Hoover
Published:  December 19, 2012 by Colleen Hoover
Source:  Bought
Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.
My Review:  Going into this, I really expect a nice, light read that I would enjoy but wouldn't leave much of an impression.  What I got was the exact opposite.  Hopeless is a book that explores difficult subjects like growing up, finding who you are, and trusting people enough to let them in.  While it was light at parts and focused a lot on the romance between the two main characters, the story it tells runs much deeper.

Sky was an interesting character.  She was very easy to relate to and I felt an instant connection to her.  She was so strong and I really liked seeing the way she handled Dean and her past.  It was heart breaking to delve into those memories but it gave us such a better understand of Sky.  She did have her moments where I really just wanted to jump into the book and shake her but overall, she was a great character.  Dean was really amazing, too.  He was a sweet guy but at times could came off as mysterious and even scary when he was being so secretive.  However, I thought he was the perfect fit for Sky once he opened up.  They made a wonderful couple and I loved seeing them together.  Learning more about his background and Sky's was so interesting and a twist I really hadn't expected.

The plot was phenomenal.  Never once did it get boring.  Even at parts where it wasn't necessarily action packed, it held my attention easily because of all of the things we were discovering and because of the relationship between Sky and Dean.  It was such a layered plot.  There was tons of different elements that all came together to create a masterfully written story.

I'm anxious to dive into the next book, Losing Hope, which I believe is the same story told by Dean's point of view.  This was a wonderful book that left an impression on me after reading.  I definitely won't be forgetting it anytime soon and I'll be exploring the other books Colleen Hoover has written!

Excerpt from A Shade of Vampire

I’d been meandering along the shore for about an hour when I suddenly sensed that I wasn’t alone. Someone was approaching me from behind. My heart leapt. I was so sure it was Ben, that when a stranger showed up beside me, I couldn’t hide my disappointment.
He must have noticed, because a smirk formed on his lips. “Were you expecting someone else, love?”
I eyed him suspiciously, remembering how many times my father had told me not to talk to strangers. I looked him over, taking in his appearance. My eyes widened. I couldn’t find words to describe how fine a man he was. He was almost beautiful. The first thing I took notice of was how his blue eyes were about three shades brighter than any I’d ever seen before. It was such a stark contrast to his pale – almost white – skin and dark hair. Standing beside me, he was easily more than half a foot taller. His height, broad shoulders and lean build reminded me of Ben, but he had a presence that was far more imposing than my best friend’s.
My gaze settled on his face.
I realized that he was inspecting me just as closely as I was him. His eyes on me suddenly made me feel uncomfortably vulnerable. I gave my father’s advice a second thought, but quickly canceled out all notions of heeding to his counsel when I reminded myself that he stopped caring a long time ago.
I straightened to my full height and mustered all the courage I had to keep myself from running away from this stranger.
Big mistake.
The confident smirk didn’t leave his face for even a moment.
“Like what you see?”
“A bit full of yourself, aren’t you?” I scoffed, annoyed by his audacity.
He stepped forward, closer to me, and leaned his head toward mine.
“Don’t I have the right to be?”
He knew he looked good and wasn’t about to act like he didn’t.
“Whatever,” was my oh-so-brilliant comeback.
My shoulders sagged with defeat as I took a step back, unsettled by how close he was now. I rolled my eyes and did a one-eighty, not quite in the mood to play whatever game this stranger was proposing.
I would soon realize that I was about to play his game whether I liked it or not.
He grabbed my arm and turned my body to face him. This motion alone made every single internal alarm I had within me go off in a frenzy.
This man was danger and I knew it. I tried to wriggle away from his touch, but I was no match for his strength.
“Tell me your name,” he commanded.
I was about to refuse, but was horrified to find myself blurting out my name in response.
“Sofia Claremont.”
As soon as I revealed my name, his eyes lit up with a kind of sinister approval. Then he reached for my face and traced his thumb over my jaw line.
“Hello, Sofia Claremont. You’re one stupid girl for taking a walk alone at this time of night. You never know what kind of evil a pretty little thing like you could happen to come by.”
I found myself wondering exactly what kind of evil he was. But I was suddenly overcome by the sensations that were surrounding me. My senses took in everything at once. I heard the waves, felt the sand, smelled the ocean salt, tasted the flavor of cherry and saw the stranger’s manic appearance as he stuck a needle to my neck. The effect was instant. I was barely able to gasp, much less scream. I went from sensing everything to sensing absolutely nothing.
My last conscious thought was that I may never see Ben again.
