It's the year 2040, and sixteen-year-old Dez Harkly is one of the last of her kind—part of a nearly extinct race of shape-shifters descended from guardians to the Egyptian pharaohs. Her home and her secret are threatened when the Council lowers the barrier, allowing the enemy race to enter the Shythe haven.

As the Narcolym airships approach, Dez and her friends rebel against their Council and secretly train for battle. Not only is Dez wary of war and her growing affection for her best friend Jace, she fears the change her birthday will bring.

When Dez's newfound power rockets out of control, it's a Narcolym who could change her fate...if she can trust him. Dez's guarded world crumbles when she discovers why the Narcos have really come to Haven Falls, and she's forced to choose between the race who raised her and the enemy she's feared her whole life.
My Review:  I was immediately taken by the blurb and the cover for this story.  I thought that both were beautiful and and very interesting.  I was excited to dive into this story and learn more about Dez and these shape-shifters.  I was also very excited to learn more about the Egyptian element in this story.  Unfortunately, those things were lacking.

The first problem I had was with the world that was created that Dez lived in.  It sounded so amazing with the different creatures and the new devices and styles.  However, there wasn't enough description.  I wish that we had been provided a better image of this new world before being thrust into the story.  I also wish we would have learned more about their Egyptian history.  There was hardly any mention of that at all throughout the story.

I had expected this to be a more plot driven story with all the problems we were presented with at the start.  That was not the case.  It seemed like the main problems in the plot took a backseat to the problems arising between the character.  There was a lot of relationship drama that stemmed from jealousy.  This wouldn't have been as much of a problem for me had the characters been more mature in how they handled things but, truthfully, I felt like Dez and the others were rather childish.  They let their own personal feelings get in the way of what they were all working toward.  I really liked Reese - one "corner" to the love triangle in this story - at first.  He was such a tough character but then he fell for Dez (for no apparent reason, might I add) and he did a complete character flip.  While the characters weren't terrible, I wish there had been more to their backgrounds and that they'd been a little more mature.

While this story did have it's downfalls, I did enjoy the writing style quite a bit.  It was clear and interesting and kept me hooked from the beginning.  There was also a really great story but it didn't get to shine as much as I felt it should with the distracting character drama.  Though this wasn't my favorite book, I'm interested in continuing the story to see where it leads.

  1. I really liked this book. I am more of a character driven reader and I this book was more character driven. There is a prequel coming to explain the Egyptian history and I am glad about that. I do see where your problems came in, the explanations were missing and yes I would have a liked a bit more explanation but I did love the writing the style and the characters and the story. Great review.

  2. I usually am a more character driven reader, also, but I think I was expecting a plot driven story and the fact that it wasn't threw me off a bit. I am really excited for the prequel! I hope it will offer more explanation and background on everything!
