Review: Alice in Zombieland

Title:  Alice in Zombieland
Series:  White Rabbit Chronicles #1
Author:  Gena Showalter
Publisher:  Harlequin Teen
Pages:  404
Format:  Hardcover

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.
Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.
Her father was right. The monsters are real….
To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….
I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.I'd tell my sister no.I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.I'd tell them I love them.I wish... Yeah, I wish.
My Review:  I was so happy when I got this book!  I had heard a lot of great things about it and - hello - it looked as though it would have something to do with Alice in Wonderland, which, in case you haven't noticed, I'm sort of obsessed with.

And I'm happy to say I quite enjoyed this read.

The plot was great - heart pounding and fast paced with lots of great zombie fighting scenes.  I really loved seeing the way it changed Alice (or better known as Ali) from being someone who was broken and defeated to a badass heroine with some mad fighting skills.  I also thought the whole "spirit zombies" idea was wonderful.  It added a unique twist on a typical zombie book.  There were a few slower parts and a few scenes where I had to go back and reread because it had been unclear but overall I thought the plot was exciting and fun.

The characters were all amazing.  Ali was a strong and witty female lead character who was able to stand up for herself when it came to zombies and super hot boys.  Speaking of which . . . Cole was a VERY enjoyable part of this book.  It took me a while to warm up to him but I did end up liking him quite a bit.  He was a good leader and the perfect match for Ali.  They really complimented each other.  Another character I absolutely adored was Kat.  She was energetic and fun and shined throughout this book, even though she was not a leading character.  I loved the scenes she was in.

The only problem I had with was the fact that there wasn't much Alice in Wonderland in this read.  Besides a few references and the titles, there were really no similarities between the two stories.  I was disappointed as that had been a major reason I was so interested in this book.  It almost felt a bit forced to have the connections.  There was no real use for them.  The book, without the Alice in Wonderland references, would have been just as good.

Still, I enjoyed this book a lot.  I thought the characters were charming, the zombies were disgusting and creepy, and the plot was fun and interesting.  If you have yet to pick up this book, I would highly suggest you check it out!
