I just read this for the first time ...Great review! I just read this for the first time as well, and I loved it! I absolutely think you're right that a reader's strong emotional reaction is a sign of the author's skill. I also just read "The Impossible Knife of Memory," which has just as much of an emotional impact, if not more of one, although the subject matter is very different.
